◊ BE a Mentee

Who are we & What do we do?

The LA ROCS program consists of Roc Docs in the Department of Geological Sciences who are invested in the success of our undergraduate students (ROCStars). Roc Docs meet biweekly with the ROCStars to informally discuss research and how to succeed in school and life as an undergraduate at CSUN. It is our mission to create a sense of community and advance the careers of our students through undergraduate geoscience research at CSUN. We regularly hold seminars that relate to geoscience topics, professional career development, and topics related to advancing careers of underserved students. These meetings and seminars are aimed at giving LA ROCS participants the tools to be successful at CSUN and beyond. We also aencourage all ROCStars to attend and present their original research at regional and national meetings (e.g., GSA, AGU). These meetings are an important venue for undergraduate students to be exposed to exciting research and to meet prospective graduate school advisors. Current ROCStars can apply for travel funds once per academic year. See Dr. Schwartz (joshua.schwartz@csun.edu) for more information about travel funds.

NEW MENTOR PROGRAM

This year the LA ROCS program has initiated a mentoring program with former ROCStars who recently graduated from the program. These former ROCStars will be ROCStar Mentors. The goal is to connect current students with geoscience mentors working in the LA community and elsewhere. Stay tuned for more developments on this program.

Become a ROCStar Mentee

The only thing you need to do become a ROCStar mentee is to be conducting undergraduate research at CSUN with a faculty mentor. If you are new and are looking for a research mentor, please reach out to Dr. Schwartz (joshua.schwartz@csun.edu) or any of the Roc Docs and we will assist you in finding a research mentor. Please also fill out the LA ROCS application form by clicking the button to the right.
